This briar pipe is crafted in limited quantities at our workshops in Villard-Saint-Sauveur, near Saint-Claude (Jura, FRANCE).
Morta comes from a tree undergoing fossilization, typically found in peat bogs and marshes (but also at the bottom of rivers and lakes). These areas are anoxic, meaning they have a low oxygen level. Preserved in this environment for several hundred or thousands of years, the trunks mineralize and become infused with silica, making the wood resistant to fire and heat. Morta (also known as "black gold") can come from various tree species, particularly oak (used here for the Series 500).
Since 2013, the Chapuis-Comoy & Cie factory have been awarded the Living Heritage Company label. Awarded by the French government, this label recognizes the excellence of rare, renowned, or ancestral know-how in the field of craftsmanship or industry.
