Originally founded in the 19th century by Eugene-Leon Ropp, Ropp has maintained plenty of classical French style across the ages. Since 1991, Ropp pipes are made in the traditional way in the workshops of Chapuis-Comoy & Cie, in Saint-Claude, France.

The ROPP Brand - Its History

The history of ROPP pipes dates back to the late 19th century in the Vosges region, in Bussang, where Eugène-Léon Ropp founded the company. It later expanded to Baume-les-Dames, in the Doubs region.

In 1991, after the closure of the original site, the company Chapuis-Comoy & Cie, based in Saint-Claude in the Jura, acquired the brand. This acquisition ensured the preservation and continuation of the production of classic models, adhering to artisanal traditions.

Today, ROPP pipes are still cherished for their vintage style and exceptional craftsmanship.

The Chapuis-Comoy & Cie Factory

In 1825, the Comoy family was already manufacturing boxwood pipes, primarily for Napoleon’s soldiers. The business truly expanded in 1856 with the discovery of briarwood, an ideal material for pipe making, which helped establish Saint-Claude as the world capital of briarwood pipes.

In 1922, an association between the Comoy family and their cousins, the Chapuis, gave birth to Chapuis-Comoy & Cie, strengthening their presence in both France and London. After World War II, the CHACOM brand emerged in 1945 and quickly became a leader in European markets.

Today, Chapuis-Comoy remains a reference in artisanal pipe making, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. The company is also recognized with the "Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant" label, a mark of excellence awarded by the French State for its exceptional expertise.
