What is meerschaum?

Meerschaum, also known as "Sepiolite," is a white mineral found notably in Turkey. Highly porous, meerschaum is a natural filter that effectively retains moisture, nicotine, and tar. Its porosity and lightness also make it a suitable material for pipe making. Meerschaum pipes are thus light and smooth to smoke, but nevertheless fragile.
